Custom Dredge Projects
16" x 16" Custom Dredge
Santa Cruz Harbor, California, USA
Launched in June 2016, this is a custom-built, 16” x 16” dredge with a hull-mounted pump. It features a PLC operating system with color touch-screen controls, Global Positioning System (GPS), electro-proportional hydraulic circuits, high-capacity service water system and an inline direct marine-style transmission for dredge pump gear ratio reduction. A planetary winch provides the swing operation. A magnetic flow meter shows the operator the velocity of the material being moved, providing information on the dredge’s efficiency. With two engines – a Caterpillar C32 dredge pump marine diesel engine and a Caterpillar C18 marine diesel-powered electric generator – the dredge fully complies with federal EPA and California CARB environmental standards. 24" x 24" Hydraulic Dustpan Dredge
Loup Power District, Central Nebraska, USA
In 2013, Loup Power District took delivery of a fully customized dustpan dredge from DSC to handle desilting of its canal. This all-electric dredge has a 298 kW digging water jet system with variable-frequency drive. It includes an office, work area, restroom and also potable water onboard. The lever control room is outfitted with a user-friendly PLC control system and mylar tinted shades for vision protection and heat reduction. See more here.
24" x 24" Electric Overburden Dredge
A phosphate company’s overburden dredge from DSC was delivered in 2012. The dredge was designed to hydraulically remove overburden to reach the matrix of phosphate product underneath. The dredge is all electric for better efficiency and reduced energy needs. It features LED lights, noise abatement devices, advanced monitoring systems and a spud carriage system that allows 25’ advance and retraction. The lever control room is outfitted with mylar tinted shades for vision protection and heat reduction.
16" x 14" Customized Shark Class Dredge
North Carolina Department of Transportation, USA
This dredge, which was christened in April 2016, features a 78’-long deckhouse that includes the machinery area, crew quarters and galley. The dredge has a GPD dredging system, an anemometer, fire and flooding alarm system, VHF radio, loud hailer and marine intercom system and a closed-circuit television system. The lever room has tinted shades for vision protection and heat reduction. The lever room layout shown is custom-designed to order. See more here.
24" x 24" and 18" x 18" Customized Marlin Class Dredges
Japaul Oil & Maritime Services, Nigeria, Africa
Two customized Marlin Class mining dredges were delivered to Japaul Oil & Maritime Services in late 2015. The dredges are two of the largest, deepest-digging cutter suction dredges to operate in Nigeria. They feature submersible dredge pumps and have 76-foot digging depth capability. The dredges are outfitted with a fully enclosed, climate-regulated control room with PLC touch-screen control system and ergonomic features. They have accommodations for 10 personnel, an office, kitchen and showers/toilets.
8" x 8" Amphibious Dredge

This concept dredge is a joint effort utilizing Wilco’s industry-leading amphibious undercarriage and a customized DSC 8” swing ladder cutter suction dredge. The Amphibian is designed with tracked pontoons for use in both water and in soft terrains where flotation is not an option. This design makes the Amphibian a viable option for coastal erosion projects, wetland restoration and beach restoration. It can climb a 60-degree angle and is capable of dredging in forward or reverse tracking modes.
22" x 20" Custom Electric Marlin Class Dredge with Custom Barge
Arkhola Sand & Gravel, Fort Smith, Arkansas, USA
Arkhola’s custom self-propelled, fully automated barge-loading dredge was designed so that it could be integrated into its existing processing plant. The DSC 60’ x 200’ aft barge contains the sand and gravel processing plant. The dredge features an overhead trolley hoist system, an onboard self-contained ladder recovery system and a 60-watt, four-station loud hailer. The climate-controlled lever room on the dredge has an Allen Bradley PLC and a 10” color touch-screen. It is designed for a single operator. See more here.
16" x 16" Dual-Pump Custom Marlin Class Dredge
Vulcan Florida Rock Sand Operation near La Belle, Florida, USA
This fully customized dredge is the world’s deepest hydraulic mining dredge, with the longest drive train ever built. It has a 200’ digging depth, a 236’ ladder and an overall length of 300’. The gantry reaches a height of 50’ above the waterline. The mass displaces approximately 1,000,000 lbs of water. A few the dredge’s other custom features include a Prospector Package, suction nozzle for shallow and deep digging depths, stainless steel J boxes and single-button emergency ladder retrieval.
24" x 24" Custom Diesel/Electric Marlin Class Dredge
Port of New Orleans, Mississippi River, Louisiana, USA
Designed for port waterway maintenance, this dredge features a 100' ladder for 60' digging depths. With a climate-controlled lever room, the dredge is operator friendly – equipped with ergonomic operator’s chair, a PLC to control dredge functions and a color touch-screen HMI. It is built with crew accommodations, four offices, a full galley, workshop and storage area. A 1,500 kW generator provides electric power. Safety features include aviation lights, short-range radar system and personnel boarding ladder.
36" Shark Class Dredge
Syncrude Canada, Tailings Management; Additional Engineering Support for Dredge Relocation
DSC was asked to engineer a plan to remove Syncrude’s 36” Shark Class dredge from a tailings pond, ensuring safety and economics for the move. Traditional moves entail removing the dredge ladder, which poses safety risks. Also, cranes must be used before and after the dredge transport, raising costs. DSC’s support allowed the dredge to be pulled from the water and transported without removing the ladder, saving Syncrude millions of dollars. This was a huge feat as the dredge weighs just short of 1,000,000 lbs.
