Polk City, Florida: After several months of competitive bidding, DSC was awarded the project to manufacture Vulcan Materials’ new dredge for their Polk Sand Plant located in central Florida. With initial discussions dating back to January 2003, Vulcan took its time to evaluate all of the bidders before issuing the order for their new dredge. In early February 2004, DSC was notified by Vulcan Materials to proceed on the manufacturing process for their new dual pump electric Marlin Class dredge.

The new dual pump electric Marlin Class dredge was customized for Vulcan Materials very specific needs. This dredge features dual 14”x14” pumps both driven by AC electric motors. Vulcan Materials chose the dual pump design to handle a great discharge distance and to reduce cost by not requiring a floating or land-based booster. “Location of the booster would have also been an issue for us since we often relocate the dredge in the lake to optimize the deposit. The dual pump design eliminated these problems and the 4,500 feet discharge range will allow us to reach the proven reserves without a booster”, states Myron Cantin of Vulcan Materials. The underwater pump is constant speed while the deck pump is capable of variable speed operation and is mechanized through DSC’s Automated Flow Control Package. In addition, Vulcan requested AC power versus the traditional DC power system. Although DC has been the typical choice for speed and torque control on larger motors, recent advances in AC drives allow them to perform similar to DC. Vulcan Materials selected AC because service and parts are readily available in the Tampa area and conventional service is seldom required unlike that of DC motors. The dredge also features digging jets powered by a 250 hp motor, a maximum dredging depth of 75 feet, and a production monitoring system.

The dredge has approximate dimensions of 131’ long x 28’ wide and was erected and launched by DSC’s crew in just 9 days. To make it all the more challenging, Hurricane Charley pounded central Florida throughout the erecting and launching phases of the dredge. As the dredge remained safe and secured during the hurricane, our only report of bad conditions were hotel room flooding where DSC’s technicians lodged during the assembly.

The customized Marlin Class dredge took approximately 20 weeks to design and manufacture; Vulcan Materials was very involved throughout all stages of construction. Vulcan Materials’ Myron Cantin exclaims, “We felt DSC met and exceeded our expectations as they were cooperative and open to design ideas, had an excellent quality control program, and understood our goals from the beginning for our new equipment.”
